Difference Between a JPEG and Vectored art
Regarding file types that are best for graphic design vectored art is the best type for long term or repeated use. If your art file needs to be scaled vectored art will be the best. Here at Hunter Signs we take the quality of our signage very seriously. We will rarely use JPEG art only if it does not hinder the quality of the product.
Here is an example of a vectored image compared to a JPEG image from a distance:

You may be thinking well what is the difference? So let’s take a closer look…

Here are the same images shown above blown up equally. As you can see the JPEG image is very pixelated compared to the vectored image. This means that if you give us a JPEG art file and it is only 2″ tall and you want your art to be 1 foot tall then it will be extremely pixelated like the image on the right. There are some instances where JPEG images will be okay on smaller scaled products but this is extremely rare. This is why we always ask for vectorized art files only, unless you are okay with us redrawing your art.
But why is this you may be asking?
Vectored images are made up of lines, points, and curves defined by mathematical equations this is why they can be scaled up or down without losing quality. While JPEG images are made up of only pixels which is why they become “blocky” or pixelated when enlarged. Vector images are also more flexible to edit than JPEGs allowing for an easier experience for our designers.
How do you know if an image is vectorized or not?
Most common vectored extensions: .AI, .EPS, .PDF, and .SVG
If you are unsure how to check a image/files extension email it to us and we will let you know!
